What is a Carbonation Calculator?

The manual Carbonation Calculator is a fast and easy way to quickly calculate gas volume. The gas volume calculations are derived from the Heath formula.   All you need to know is the psi or kg/cm2 of the pressure and the temperature of what you’re measuring.

It’s a straight-forward tool that can be kept easily within reach or on hand given its thin and compact size.  Additionally, the Calculator is dual-sided.  One side takes into account snift, while the other side is for when there is no snift. 

What is SNIFT?

Snift is the release of pressure from bottling equipment, or what happens when you unscrew a cap on a bottle or open a can of a carbonated beverage.  The Carbon Calculator takes this into account when calculating the volume of gas, as seen by the different sides.

How to Use a Manual Carbonation Calculator

Utilizing the Carbonation Calculator is as easy as lining up a few arrows and lines.

To begin with, determine whether snift should be taken into account and flip the Carbonation Calculator to the relevant side.  The Calculator has a top window on the circle which is labeled with psi and kg/cm2. 

By observing the pressure value on your gauge (using whichever unit of measurement), you can line up the value with the arrow indicators.  Once those have been aligned, all you have to do after that is find the temperature along the bottom scale – whether it is in Fahrenheit or Celsius. 

This scale is a Universal Chart that has a range of 30° to 90°F along the top, while underneath is a range of -1° to 33°C.  Once the temperature has been located, the windowed area will have the corresponding volume of gas.

Step by Step Instructions

  1. Determine whether SNIFT needs to be accounted for
  2. Find the pressure value (in psi or kg/cm2)
  3. Align the value with the arrows in the top window labeled GAUGE PRESSURE
  4. Locate TEMPERATURE (either Fahrenheit or Celsius) on the bottom scale
  5. Find corresponding value/number in the windowed bottom scale labeled VOLUMES
  6. Now you’ve found your gas volume!
